Dr Charlene Chalmers, MD

Director

Charlene volunteered as a teacher in Berega for a year before starting Medical school. She fell completely in love with the students and the village and couldn't just walk away at the end of her time there. She kept in touch with many students and continued to offer her support in any way she could. In 2018, she helped start Lighting the Way Tanzania to not only continue the primary school sponsorship program but also to help graduating students continue their studies in good secondary schools. Since that time, LTWT has been able to send 30 students forward to safer and better secondary schools. LTWT is focused on continuing to help students of Bishop Chitemo Primary School with the greatest need.

Ruth Mgego

Manager - Bishop Chitemo Primary School

Ruth and her husband Isaac were the inspiration to open Bishop Chitemo Primary School in the first place. Isaac is the Director of the Berega Hospital and they wanted to keep their children home rather than send them away to boarding school.
Ruth is a vital member of the LTWT team. She helps keep an eye on our sponsored students and sends reports about the kids to sponsors each semester.  It helps to put a face to the name!
